The Providence College softball team defeated Villanova, 5-2, on Sunday, April 1 in a BIG EAST Conference game in Villanova, Pa. With the win, Providence (12-18, 4-1 BIG EAST) completed a three-game weekend sweep of Villanova (23-9, 0-3 BIG EAST) as the Friars captured a doubleheader on Saturday, March 31.
The Friars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI double by senior Michelle Huber (Dana Point, Calif.). The Wildcats responded in the bottom half of the inning when Molly Manning hit a two-run double to give her team a 2-1 edge.
In the fifth inning, the Friars loaded the bases with two outs and freshman Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) smacked a grand slam to put the Friars ahead for good, 5-2. It marked Dederick's team-leading fifth home run this season and the fourth in five games this week.
Senior Alicia Grosso (Baldwin, N.Y.) pitched a complete game, yielded three hits and did not allow an earned run as she collected her seventh win of the season. Grosso did not allow an earned run in two complete games this weekend.
Junior Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) and freshman Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) each had two hits for the Friars who finished with 10 hits for the second consecutive game.
The Friars are back in action at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3 with a non-conference game versus Harvard in Providence, R.I.
