Softball Defeated By Villanova In BIG EAST Conference Weekend Openers
March 31, 2001 PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team was defeated by Villanova University, 5-0 and 8-0, in the BIG EAST Conference opening weekend doubleheader. The Friars, who opened the season 11-5 have dropped four-straight games - all at home in the brand new Raymond Field complex. The Wildcats (15-3 overall/2-0 BIG EAST) road the overpowering pitching performance by Theresa Hornick, who pitched six innings of five-hit, 11-strikeout ball in game one and who backed that effort with four innings of two-hit, six-strikeout ball in game two. The Friars (11-9 overall/0-2 BIG EAST) totalled nine hits on the day and have not scored a run since the fourth inning of game one against Dartmouth on Thursday. Providence returns to action on Sunday, April 1st when they host Rutgers University at 12 noon at the Raymond Field complex.
