PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College softball team blanked in-state rival Rhode Island in its home opener to capture its first win of the season on Thursday, March 27 at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars improve to 1-15 on the season while Rhode Island moves to 6-18. Sophomore Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.) threw a complete game limiting the Rams to one base hit. In addition, Amos tallied two strike outs.
Providence took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Junior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) led things off with a single to center field. Harrell advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.). Harrell advanced to third on a ground out by junior Sarah Kitterman (Houston, Tx.) before reaching home on a mishandled-grounder hit by senior Kaitlyn Duval (Shrewsbury, Mass.).
The Friars added a run in the fifth. Duval reached base on an error to start things off. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Megan Rollings (Marysville, Wash.). Sophomore Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) drove Duval home to help the Friars to a 2-0 lead.
Providence tallied their final three runs in the bottom of the sixth on a homerun from Kitterman to secure the Friars' 5-0 victory.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, March 29 when it hosts DePaul in a double header as a part of its BIG EAST home opener. The first pitch between the Friars and Blue Demons is scheduled for noon. The second half of the double header is slated for 2:30 p.m.
