FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Providence College softball team posted a win and a tie at Fairfield on Thursday afternoon in a non-conference double header. The Friars defeated the Stags, 4-0, in the first game and then played to a 3-3 tie (six innings) in the second game as play was halted because of darkness.

In the first game, sophomore Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) earned her second consecutive shutout as she pitched five-plus innings and allowed just five hits, while striking out five batters to lead PC to a 4-0 victory. Freshman Kathryn Sullivan (Lagrangeville, N.Y.) pitched the rest of the way and struck out two batters to earn her second save of the season.

The Friars scored all four runs in the second inning as they totalled three hits and took advantage of an error. Sophomore Julie Fowler (Langley, B.C.) drew a bases loaded walk to drive in a run, while classmate Katelyn Revens (Warwick, R.I.) capped off the inning with an RBI single. Revens had two of PC's four hits in the first game.

In the second game, the Friars took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Revens reached on an error, stole second base and eventually came around to score on a wild pitch. The Stags responded in the bottom half of the inning as Kristina Lingo hit an RBI triple to score Julia Jacoby who led off with a base hit. The Friars scored twice in the fifth inning to take a 3-1 lead as juniors Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) and Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) each had RBI singles. Fairfield bounced back again in the bottom half of the inning when Kristie Trifiolis hit a two-run single to even the score (2-2). Neither team could score in the sixth inning as the game was stopped because of darkness.

Junior Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) pitched four-plus innings for the Friars, while Sullivan tossed one and two-thirds innings of relief. Sheehy had two hits, while Revens scored two runs and stole two bases.

The Friars are back in action on Saturday, March 29 when they host the University of Connecticut in the BIG EAST opener at Raymond Field. The first game of the double header will begin at noon.
