Box Score

Providence, R.I. -- The Providence College softball team split two games with the Quinnipiac University Bobcats, 3-4 (10 inn.) and 2-1, in the home opening double header on Wednesday, March 26 at Raymond Field.

In first game, the Friars got on the board early with two hits and a run in the first inning. Scoring the run for Providence was sophomore Jackie Karsnia (Spring, Texas). The Bobcats scored three runs on three hits in the third inning forcing sophomore Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) to relieve starting pitcher Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Quinnipiac scored two runs on a double by junior Elizabeth Euley then the scored another run on a failed pickoff attempt by the Friars. The Friars answered back in the bottom of the third and sixth innings with a run and two hits in each inning. The game needed three extra innings to be decided and was won in the top of the 10th inning as Lauren Welch scored when a failed attempt by the Friars to throw behind the runner on second base caused the ball to trickle into left field and the winning run to score. Quinnipiac junior pitcher Melissa Reynolds shut Providence down in the bottom of the 10th inning to get the victory. Friar freshman Elena Romero (Chulz Vista, Calif.) finished the game with two runs scored and one RBI.

The second game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning when Providence sophomore first baseman Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.) hit her second homerun of the season to put Providence in the lead, 1-0. Friar junior starting pitcher Cori VanDusen (Riverside, Calif.) had a no-hitter through five and two-thirds innings until Bobcat shortstop Sarah Collins broke it up with a single to left field. Collins was replaced by pinch runner, Euley, who then scored to tie the game on a single by senior Jill Cimminello. The Friars responded in the bottom half of the inning with what ended up to be a game-winning single by Treveloni that scored VanDusen with the winning run. Due to darkness, the game was called after the winning run was scored in the bottom of the sixth inning. Treveloni finished the game by going 3-for-3 with one run scored, two RBI, and one home run.

Providence outhit Quinnipiac, 9-4 and 8-2, in game one and two, respectively. With the split, the Friars improve to 8-5 on the year, while the Bobcats move to 11-5.

Providence College returns to action on Saturday, March 29 as they play a double header at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass. at noon.
