The Providence College softball team extended its win streak to four games with a double header sweep against Fairfield, Wednesday afternoon at Raymond Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars won the first game, 2-1, and took the second contest, 5-4.
In the game one, junior Danielle Bertolette (Temecula, Calif.) pitched her second consecutive complete game to lead PC to a 2-1 triumph. Bertolette allowed just one run on seven hits and struck out seven batters. Senior Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.) gave the Friars a 1-0 lead in the first inning when she smacked her second home run of the season. The Stags tied the in the fourth inning when Meghan Borst hit an RBI single. The Friars took the lead for good in the bottom of the fourth inning as senior Gina Rossi (Bakersfield, Calif.) hit a single down the left field line to score junior Christy Becker (Atlanta, Ga.).
In the second game, the Friars took a 5-2 lead and held on for a 5-4 win. Sheehy's double in the first inning gave her team the early lead, but the Stags scored once in the second inning and added another run in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead thanks to an RBI single by Kayla Marth. The Friars then scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to regain the lead (5-2). Providence combined for five hits in the inning, including junior Teresa Bertels' (Lower Gwynedd, Pa.) two-run double. Senior pitchers Jennifer Maccio (Huntington Station, N.Y.) and Alisha Levin (Madisonville, Ky.) combined to help the Friars in the victory. Maccio started and went four innings to earn the win. Levin pitched the rest of the way and struck out two batters. Sheehy combined for three hits in the two games as she extended her hit streak to 11 games.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, March 28 when they host Rutgers in a BIG EAST opening double header beginning at noon at Raymond Field.
