Providence Softball Sweeps Double Header At Quinnipiac, 5-3, 11-5
March 25, 2004 HAMDEN, Conn. - The Providence College softball team defeated the Quinnipiac University Bobcats, 5-3 and 11-5 in a double header in Hamden, Conn. With the two wins, Providence improved to 13-6 overall, while Quinnipiac fell to 3-8.
In the first game, the Friars came back from a 3-1 deficit and scored one run in the fourth inning, three runs in the sixth inning to earn a 5-3 victory. Sophomore Elena Romero (Chula Vista, Calif.) hit a home run in the fourth inning to bring PC, within, 3-2. In the sixth inning, the Friars took the lead for good on two home runs. Freshman Rachel Bartholomew (Coto De Caza, Calif.) hit a two run home run as she also drove in junior Kalena Petersen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) who had doubled. For Rachel Bartholomew, it marked her first collegiate home run. She had three hits and two runs. Junior Jaclyn Treveloni (Ashland, Mass.) hit a solo home run to complete the scoring. On the mound, senior Cori Van Dusen (Riverside, Calif.) earned the win as she pitched seven innings, allowing three runs on two hits and striking out five batters. Quinnipiac was led by Sarah Collins, who hit a three-run home run the third inning to give the Bobcats a 3-1 lead.
In the nightcap, the Friars used a seven-run sixth inning to defeat the Bobcats, 11-5. PC's power surge continued as Romero and Treveloni each had two-run home runs in the fourth inning as the Friars took a 4-1 lead. The Bobcats responded in the bottom of the fourth inning as Collins hit a grand slam to give Quinnipiac a 5-4 lead. However, the Friars closed out the game in the sixth inning with seven runs. Nicole Bartholomew (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) earned the win as she pitched six innings and struck out five batters.
The Friars are back in action on Saturday, March 27 when they begin BIG EAST play at Villanova.
