SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -
The Providence College softball team was defeated by Seton Hall, 7-5, on Sunday afternoon. The game came down to Friars' last at bat when they had the bases loaded with two outs, but were unable to generate the tying runs.
Seton Hall (9-20, 3-0 BIG EAST) put up three runs in the bottom of the first to take a quick 3-0 lead. The Friars (0-15, 0-3 BIG EAST) responded quickly in the bottom of the second with two runs to pull within one of the Pirates (3-2). Junior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) led the inning off with a double to right center. Junior Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) then reached on a bunt single. Harrell and Luttrell were able to score on a fielding error by Seton Hall.
The Pirates scored two runs on three hits in the third to move their lead to 5-2.
Both teams traded runs in the fifth to bring the score to 6-3. Providence scored when Harrell touched home on a Luttrell double down the left field line.
Seton Hall scored a single run in the sixth, this time on four hits in the inning to bring the score to 7-3.
In the bottom of the seventh PC fought hard to score two runs. It started out with sophomore Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) single through the left side that scored senior Marie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.). With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore Danielle Deraney (Shrewsbury, Mass.) drew a walk to bring in junior Lauren Paiva (Middletown, R.I.), and make the score 7-5, Seton Hall. A pop up ended the inning and Seton Hall took a close 7-5 victory.
Deraney and Baldassari led the Friars with three hits and one RBI each. Luttrell also collected an RBI for the Friars.
Jen Metzger (4-3) pitched in the win for Seton Hall going 4.2 innings and yielding one earned run. Freshman Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) took the loss for the Friars with 5.1 innings pitched and five earned runs.
The Friars next play at Boston University on Thursday, March 27. The first pitch is set for 4:00 p.m.
