ROCK HILL, S.C. - The Providence College softball team was defeated in their first game at the 2002 Winthrop Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. on Friday, March 15 as St. Peter's College defeated Providence, 4-2.

In Providence's first game at the Winthrop Invitational, the Friars were defeated by St. Peter's College, 4-2, on Friday, March 15. The Friars scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first inning and after the Peacock's tied the contest at 1-1 in the top of the fourth inning, PC took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning. St. Peter's scored three runs in the top of the sixth inning off Providence starter, Melissa Peterson (Huntington Beach, Calif.), and took a 4-2 lead. The Friars were unable to score in their last two innings at the plate. The Friars out-hit the Peacocks', 14-4, but three PC errors proved costly.
