BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Providence College softball team swept two games at the FAU Embassy Suites Classic Sunday afternoon in Boca Raton, Fla. The Friars defeated Bethune-Cookman, 3-2, and tournament host, Florida Atlantic, 9-0, in five innings.
Against Bethune-Cookman, the Friars took a 1-0 first inning lead on an RBI single by Stephanie Kiesel (Ramona, Calif.). After the Wildcats tied the game in the top of the second inning, the Friars regained the lead (3-2) in the bottom of the inning when Lauren Paiva (Middletown, R.I.) doubled to drive in freshman Shanelle Harrell(Irvine, Calif.) who led off with a double.
The Wildcats' Shamaria Engram hit a lead-off home run in the fifth inning to even the score at 2-2. The Friars sealed the win in the bottom of the seventh inning when freshman Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) hit a walk-off single. The Friars finished with 11 hits including two each by Dederick, Kiesel and sophomore Kaitlyn Duval (Shrewsbury, Mass.). In the pitcher's circle, junior Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) earned the win as the pitched one and two-thirds innings and did not yield a hit. Senior Alicia Grosso(Baldwin, N.Y.) started and pitched five and one-third innings, allowed one earned run and struck out four batters.
In the second game, Clauss pitched five shutout innings and the Friars erupted for six runs in the fourth inning en route to the 9-0 triumph. Dederick drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second inning to give PC a 1-0 lead. The Friars then scored twice in the third inning, capped off by an RBI single by Duval, to increase the lead to 3-0. In the fourth inning, PC totaled six runs and five hits, including a two-run single by junior Jessie Bryant(Marlborough, Mass.).
Duval finished with three hits, two runs and two RBIs, while seniors Jen Abrams
(Reading, Mass.) and Michelle Huber
(Dana Point, Calif.) had two hits and two RBIs.
The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, March 14 when they play Bethune-Cookman in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
