The Providence College softball team returned to its winning ways by defeating Charleston Southern, 3-2, and Gardner-Webb, 8-0, in five innings at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational Saturday in Rock Hill, S.C. With the two victories, the Friars improved to 6-7.
In the first game, Charleston Southern took the lead in the first inning as Jill Shondel hit a two-out home run to make the score, 1-0. The Friars responded in their half of the first inning when senior Rachel Bartholomew (Aliso Viejo, Calif.) doubled to drive in classmate Katie Ross (Middleboro, Mass.) who led off the inning with a double. PC took the lead for good in the fifth inning, scoring twice on base hits by Ross and sophomore Mary Rose Sheehy (Woodbridge, Conn.). Jillian LaFrance belted a home run in the seventh inning to bring the Buccaneers within one run, but PC senior pitcher Sara Surosky (Elmira, N.Y.) did allow Charleston Southern to get any closer. Surosky earned her second win of the season as she pitched seven innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out 10 batters.
The Friars also captured the second game, defeating Gardner-Webb, 8-0, in five innings. Junior Samantha Pittman (San Diego, Calif.) and Bartholomew each hit RBI singles in the first inning to give PC a 2-0 lead. The Friars exploded for five runs in the second inning to increase their lead to 7-0. After Pittman and Bartholomew drove in the first two runs of the second inning, freshman Christy Becker (San Diego, Calif.) smacked a three-run home run as PC had a seven-run cushion. It marked Becker's second home run of her career.
Freshman pitcher Danielle Bertolette
(Temecula, Calif.) earned her first career shutout as she allowed five hits in five innings of action to improve to 3-1. Jessi Polk had two hits for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday at the Winthrop/adidas Invitational. The opponent and time has not been determined.
