The Providence College softball team (3-9) was defeated by St. Joseph’s, 6-1, and lost to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 7-0, on Fri., March 8 in Clearwater, Fla. at the USF Under Armour Classic.
In the Friars’ first game of the day, they were defeated by St. Joseph’s, 6-1. Providence gave up two runs in the first inning, one in the fifth inning and three in the seventh. The Friars’ lone run was scored by sophomore Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) off a bunt from junior Marie Flego (Little Silver, N.J.). Harrell and Flego led the team offensively as both went 2-3. Freshman Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.) suffered the loss, but recorded four strikeouts.
Providence lost its second game of the day to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, 7-0. SIUE junior pitcher Erin Greenwalt held the Friars to four hits. Junior Emily O’Keefe (Southington, Conn.) pitched a complete game for PC and recorded the loss.

PC and Loyola played twice in 2010 at the FAU Strike Out Cancer Tournament in Boca Raton, Fla. The two teams split the weekend with the Ramblers defeating the Friars in the first game, 8-0, on Feb. 26, and Providence earning a 5-2 win on Feb. 28. The Ramblers held a 6-5 record entering this weekend with wins over Rhode Island, Quinnipiac, Eastern Kentucky, Toledo, Penn and LaSalle. Loyola Chicago is led offensively by juniors Lauren Zawoski (.478) and Lauren Moore (.342, four HR, 14 RBI).
Providence and Brigham Young have met twice with the Cougars holding a 2-0 advantage. In their last meeting, BYU defeated PC, 5-2, in Fresno, Calif. on March 6, 2009. In their first meeting, the Cougars defeated the Friars, 12-2, on Feb. 23, 2002. Brigham Young has registered a 9-13 record this season, including two wins over Maine on the first day of the USF Classic.
Providence will play their final game of the USF Under Armour Classic on Sun. March 10 against Tennessee Tech at 9:00 a.m.
