 CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Providence College softball team opened its season on Friday, March 7 in Clearwater, Fla. at the USF Under Armour Invitational. Providence started its season with a 8-7 loss against Central Michigan and a 3-1 loss vs. Fordham.

Providence lost its first game against Central Michigan, 8-7. The game started with scoreless first inning by both teams, but each team tallied one run in the second. Junior Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.) singled through the left side to score junior Kelsi Luttrell (Mission Viejo, Calif.) to tie the game at one and score Providence's first run of the season. The Friars took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third when sophomore Kiki Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) scored on a wild pitch.

Both teams scored multiple runs in the fourth with Central Michigan putting up four while PC upped the Chippewa's, scoring five. Baldassari drove in Dedereick and scored on a fielder's choice by junior Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.). Junior Megan Rollings (Marysville, Wash.) then scored on a throwing error. The inning was capped off with a two-run home run on the first collegiate hit by freshman McKall Miller (Ashburn, Va.), bringing the score to 7-5, in favor of PC.

Central Michigan scored one run in the fifth and two in the sixth to grab the victory as PC was unable to generate the tying run. Baldassari led the Friars going 2-for-3, with two runs scored and one RBI. Freshman pitcher Taylor Huntly (Las Vegas, Nev.) took the loss while Chelsea Sundberg picked up the win for the Chippewa's.

In the Friars' second game of the day, they were defeated by Fordham, 3-1. Baldassari scored the Friars' only run when she reached on a fielding error and scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the first. Huntly pitched the complete game for Providence and struck out four batters. Dederick and Rollings registered the only hits for the Friars. Michele Daubman had the complete game win for the Rams. Fordham scored its runs in the top of the first (one) and sixth (two).

The Friars continue play in the USF Under Armour Invitational tomorrow when they face Southern Illinois and Saint Joseph's at 4:00 p.m. and 6:15 p.m., respectively.
