CLEARWATER, FLA. -
The Providence College softball team (3-7) was defeated by Illinois, 11-2, in its final game of the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. on Sun., March 3.
The Friar’s two runs were scored by senior Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.) and sophomore Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) in the fourth inning. Bryant singled to get on base to start the inning. Next at bat was Harrell who double to moved Bryant to third. The following two batters hit singles to bring both players home, and cut the lead to one.
The Fighting Illini added two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, and six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the victory.
Following the tournament, the Friars will stay in Florida to take on Bethune Cookman in a doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m. on Wed., March 6 at Daytona Beach.
The Friars will remain in Florida the following weekend to play in the USF Under Armour Classic where they will play games versus Saint Joseph’s, SIUE, Loyola Chicago, Brigham Young and Tennessee Tech. Providence will host the Yale Bulldogs on Wed., March 20 in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m. to open its home schedule.
