The Providence College softball team fell to Central Michigan, 5-1, and was defeated by Loyola Marymount, 7-3, on the first day of the USF Under Armour Invitational on Fri., March 1 in Clearwater, Fla.
In its first game of the day, Providence lost to Central Michigan, 5-1. In the third inning, freshman Kiarra Baldassari (Denville, N.J.) tallied the Friars’ lone-run off of a double hit by sophomore Kristie Dederick (Camarillo, Calif.). Junior Emily O’Keefe (Southington, Conn.) pitched the first two innings, allowing four runs and recorded one strikeout. O’Keefe was relieved by freshman Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.) who gave up one run and recorded one strike out.
In their second game of the day, the Friars fell to Loyola Marymount, 7-3. The game was tied 3-3 through the fifth inning before Loyola Marymount took a 4-3 lead. Loyola Marymount added its final three runs in the top of the seventh. Amos pitched the complete game. She allowed ten hits and recorded five strikeouts.
On Sat., March 2 the Friars take on Quinnipiac at 2:45 p.m. and Florida Gulf Coast at 5:00 p.m. in their second day of the Invitational.
In their last game against the Bobcats, the Friars swept Quinnipiac in a doubleheader in Providence, R.I. On March 25, 2008, the Friars won the first game, 4-1, and the second game, 1-0. Quinnipiac has started its 2013 season with a record of 1-3, with its lone win coming over Drexel (1-0) at the UNCG Spartan Classic Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. The Bobcats’ offense is led by senior third-baseman Bridget Figmic with a .571 batting average.
Florida Gulf Coast has started its season with an overall record of 8-4. Offensively the Eagles are led by junior catcher Chelsea Zgrabik who leads the team with a .364 batting average, 13 RBI and three homeruns. To date, sophomore pitcher Shelby Morgan has recorded a team best ERA of 0.71 in eight appearances.
On Sun., March 3, the Friars will play their final game of the tournament against Illinois.
