The Providence College softball team defeated Connecticut, 2-1, and was defeated by the hosts from Florida Atlantic, 2-1, at day two of the “Strike-Out Cancer” Tournament on Sat., Feb. 23 in Boca Raton, Fla.
In its first game of the day, Providence defeated BIG EAST foe Connecticut, 2-1 in what was played as a non-conference game. The Friars were the first to score in the bottom of fourth inning when sophomore Lauren Paiva (Middletown, R.I.) singled to drive in senior Jessie Bryant (Marlborough, Mass.). The Huskies equalized with one run in the top of the fifth, but PC took the win off a go-ahead homerun by sophomore Sarah Kitterman (Houston, Texas) in the bottom of the inning.
Junior Emily O’Keefe (Southington, Conn.) pitched the first five innings and recorded the win. Freshman Kiara Amos (Malden, Mass.) came into the game after the first batter singled in the sixth inning and went on to record the save.
The Friars fell to host Florida Atlantic in their second game of the day, 2-1. The Owls scored one run in the first inning, which Providence matched in the top of the sixth inning off a triple from sophomore Shanelle Harrell (Irvine, Calif.) that brought in junior Kaitlyn Duval (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Florida Atlantic took the win in the bottom off the sixth off a double from sophomore Alexa Ballard. Ballard went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the win.
Senior Corinne Clauss (Davie, Fla.) pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and registering five strikeouts.
On Sun., Feb. 24, the Friars play their final game of the tournament against Towson. In their last meeting, Providence was defeated by Towson, 8-1, at the USF Under Armour Invitational in Clearwater, Fla. on March 17, 2012.
The Friars will compete in three additional tournaments before their first home series of the season versus the Yale Bulldogs. The Friars will host the Bulldogs on Wed., March 20, in a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m at Raymond Field located on the Providence College campus.
