Softball Wraps Up D9 Tournament With A Win

ORLANDO, FLA. – The Providence College softball team finished the D9 Orange Blossom Tournament with a win as they defeated Bethune-Cookman 3-0 on Feb. 19. With the win, Providence improves to 2-3 on the season.

The Friars began the scoring in the 2nd inning. Nicole Lundstrom (Rehoboth, Mass.) started the inning off with a double. Nadia Kemp (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) then followed this up with a walk. Lundstrom advanced to 3rd base on a passed ball but was then thrown out at home plate when she attempted to advance while Kemp stole second base. After a walk by Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.), Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.) doubled down the left field line to drive in Kemp, and put Providence up 1-0.

Providence built on their lead in the bottom of the 4th inning. Lundstrom began the inning with a walk and then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kemp. Portillo proceeded to single and advance Lundstrom to third. Mulry hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Lundstrom. Alison Abbatiello (North Salem, N.Y.) then singled to center and drove in Portillo, and increase the lead to 3-0. This proved to be the final score as Providence held Bethune-Cookman scoreless in the final three innings.

Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) shined in the win, as she only allowed one hit in the complete game shut out.

The Friars had five different players with at least one hit in the win.

Providence next plays at the University of Central Florida Tournament from March 3-7. The Friars will play the University of Central Florida, Florida Gulf Coast University and Stetson University in the seven game tournament.
