Providence Softball Edges UNC For First Win Of The Season

SANFORD, FLA. – The Providence College women’s softball team earned its first win of the season on Sunday, Feb. 11. The Friars defeated the University of North Carolina Tar Heels with a score of 2-1.  The Friars now have a record of 1-4 on the season.

HIGHLIGHTS:
The Friars started the scoring in the top of the 3rd inning. Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) began the inning with a leadoff single. Lee then stole both second and third base to set up Vanessa Portillo (Chatsworth, Calif.). Portillo delivered an RBI single to put Providence up 1-0.

The Tar Heels responded in the bottom of the 3rd and tied the game at 1.

Providence reclaimed the lead in the top of the 5th inning. Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) began the inning with a walk. She then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.). Compton stole third to again set up Portillo. Portillo delivered again by hitting a sacrifice fly to score Compton and take a 2-1 lead. Providence would hold the lead for the rest of the game to take home the victory.

Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) pitched a complete game to improve her record to 1-1. In seven innings, Trinidad tallied three strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Seven Friars recorded hits, led by Portillo who had two hits and two RBI.

ON DECK:
The Friars travel back to Florida for the University of North Florida Osprey Tournament on Feb. 16-18. The tournament will be held in Jacksonville, Fla.
