Providence Softball Drops Two Games On Day Two Of UCF Tournament

SANFORD, FLA. – The Providence College women’s softball team played a doubleheader at the second day of the UCF “Friends of Jaclyn” Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 10.

GAME AGAINST SOUTH ALABAMA NOTES:
The Friars started day two with a game against the South Alabama Jaguars. Providence got the scoring going in the top of the 3rd inning. Freshman Marisa Jenkins (Randolph, N.J.) started the rally with a one out single. Mackensie Compton (Langhorne, Pa.) followed this up with another single to put runners on first and second. Senior Brittney Veler (Santa Rosa, Calif.). took full advantage by hitting a bases clearing triple to put Providence up 2-0. Veler was then brought in by a throwing error on a hit by Paige Mulry (West Roxbury, Mass.)

The Jaguars fought back into the game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the fourth and another run in the bottom of the 5th to tie the score at 3-3.

South Alabama would score once more in the bottom of the 6th inning to take a 4-3 lead and that would end up being the final score.

Crista San Antonio (East Meadow, N.Y.) and Emma Lee (Orange, Calif.) both recorded hits along with Compton, Jenkins and Veler.

Miranda Trinidad (La Habra, Calif.) pitched a complete game in the loss for the Friars. She recorded five strikeouts and only allowed two walks in six innings of work. She now has a record of 0-1 on the season.

GAME AGAINST UCF NOTES:
The Friars returned to action against UCF for the second game of their doubleheader. UCF started the scoring in the top of the 3rd inning by recording two runs.

Providence cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 6th inning. Compton began the inning with a single and then was advanced to second on a sac bunt by Lee. She was then brought home by an RBI single by Veler to bring the score to 2-1.

UCF responded in the top of the 7th by scoring another two runs to make the score 4-1.

In the bottom of the 7th, the Providence had the bases loaded with one out. Taylor Stephen (Monarch Beach, Calif.) hit an RBI single to bring the score to 4-2 but the Friars were unable to score again.

Veler went 2-3 on the day with an RBI to lead the offensive effort for Providence.

Christina Ramirez (Niceville, Fla.) pitched a complete game in the loss for the Friars. In seven innings, Ramirez struck out five batters. She now has a record of 0-2 on the season.

ON DECK:
The Friars finish up the UCF “Friends of Jaclyn” Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 11 with a game against UNC at 9:30 a.m.
