Women's Soccer Nabs All-BIG EAST Honors

Oct. 28, 2017

NEW YORK, N.Y. - With the 2017 BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship, presented by Jeep, beginning tomorrow [Oct. 29], the conference announced its annual post-season awards today. The Friars, who are the No. 2 seed, open BIG EAST Tournament First-Round action at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 29 against DePaul on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I.

Providence's Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) earned the Friars lone major award earning BIG EAST Freshman of the Year. Hogan shares this honor with Butler's Leonie Doege and Xavier's Sydney Schembri. She also earned All-BIG EAST Second Team honors with teammate Kayla Steeves (Needham, Mass.) and BIG EAST All-Freshman Team recognition with teammate Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.). Katie Day (East Kingston, N.H) represented Providence on the All-BIG EAST First Team.

Hogan has led the Friars in goal during her rookie campaign. She has recorded seven shutouts on the season and owns a 0.96 goals-against average and a 0.815 save percentage. The three honors earned by Hogan (Freshman of the Year, All-BIG EAST Second Team and BIG EAST All-Freshman Team) are the most by a Providence player in program history for a single-season. Hogan also is the first player in program history to earn BIG EAST Freshman of the Year honors.

Steeves has been a dominant force in the Friars' midfield to help the team to 10 victories on the season. She has tallied five points on one goal and three assists. She is tied for the team lead in assists with Hannah McNulty (Warwick, R.I.)

Day is the first Providence player to be named to the All-BIG EAST First Team since Catherine Zimmerman (Madison, N.J.) in 2015. She leads the Friar defensive line and has helped the team keep BIG EAST foe's to two-or-less goals in each of their contests. Most notably, the Friars kept then-No. 15 Georgetown scoreless in a 1-0 victory on Oct. 15. Day is tied for second on the team in scoring with Christina Klaum (Rockville Centre, N.Y.), having tallied six points on two goals and two assists.

Birchwell has seen action in 17-of-18 games as rookie and provided an offensive spark with two game-winning goals against Marquette (Oct. 8) and Seton Hall (Oct. 22). She owns five points this season on two goals and one assist.

All-BIG EAST Teams and major awards are voted on by the league’s head coaches, who are not permitted to vote for their own players. All-BIG EAST First and Second Teams are comprised of three forwards, three midfielders, three defenders, one goalkeeper and one at-large selection. The BIG EAST All-Freshman Team recognizes the top-11 freshman vote earners. Full list of award winner below.
