Women's Soccer Preview
Oct. 10, 2002 University of Pittsburgh Panthers (3-10-0/0-6-0) - The Panthers come to Glay Field looking to put an end to their nine-game losing streak. Pittsburgh's last game was a 3-1 defeat at Seton Hall on October 6. The only goal scored by the Panthers was off a header from senior midfielder Lauren Sciocchetti (Wallingford, Pa.). This goal was her team-leading fifth of the year. She also leads Pittsburgh in points with 10. Second on the team with five points is Jacqueline Fix (Center, Pa.). The senior defender holds the team-lead in assists with three. Freshman Jamie Pelusi (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has started all 13 games in goal for the Panthers. Pelusi has made 97 saves and recorded two shutouts this season. Roland Sturk is in his seventh season as head coach. He was hired in 1996, the inaugural year for Pittsburgh women's soccer. The Panthers and the Friars have met just three times. Pittsburgh owns a 1-0-2 record versus Providence.
Providence College Friars (6-4-2/1-3-0) - The Friars look to defeat Pittsburgh for the first time in school history as they host the Panthers for the first time in five years. In PC's most recent game on October 4, the Friars defeated New Hampshire, 2-1. Sophomore midfielder Maura Robertson (Wellesley, Mass.) had another productive day as she scored both Friar goals. Her two goals increased her team lead in goals (five) and points (15). Robertson also leads the team and is tied for fifth in the BIG EAST with five assists. Assisting on one of Robertson's goals was freshman forward Kerry O'Malley (Longmeadow, Mass.). She was awarded BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors for her performance last week. Along with her assist against New Hampshire, O'Malley assisted on the two goals scored against Syracuse on October 4th. For the season, O'Malley has two goals, four assists and eight points. Junior goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) gave up just one goal against New Hampshire and now has a goals against average of 1.13. This mark ranks seventh among BIG EAST goalkeepers. Friar fourth-year Head Coach Tracy Kerr looks to lead PC to its fourth straight win at home. This feat has not been accomplished since the 1992 season when the Friar women's soccer team won five in-a-row at home.
