The Providence College women's soccer team opens its BIG EAST schedule on Friday, September 21st against the Connecticut Huskies at 4:00 p.m. at Glay Field.

The Friars played two games this past weekend including a 1-0 victory over the Hartford Hawks on Friday, September 14th. Freshman Marra Whaley (Edina, Minn.) scored her first collegiate goal in the sixth minute of the game. Junior Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.) sent a corner kick into the middle of the box that Whaley deflected into the back of the net. Gent was credited with her second assist of the season. PC also took on the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Sunday, September 16th. Despite controlling possession for most of the first half, the Friars were defeated by the Bobcats 3-0.

The Friars enter this weekend's play led by senior goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) who is currently seventh in the BIG EAST in saves with 24, and is eighth in the BIG EAST in saves per game with a 4.00 average per contest. Elfers has started each game of the season for PC. Junior Megan Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y) has also been a leader on the field this season with her great play. Mancarella scored the Friars' first goal of the season back on September 2nd against UMass.

Connecticut vists Glay Field after taking part in their own UConn Classic this past weekend. The Huskies won the Classic after two victories over Brown and Fairfield. Senior Karen Riviere has been one of the leaders for UConn this season and scored three goals over the weekend. The Huskies also count on senior Meghan Schnur who assisted on three goals in the game against Fairfield.

 

 

The Friars will next play two road games. The first game will be played at Fairfield on Sunday, September 23rd at 1:00 p.m. Then PC will travel to Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Friday, September 28th to take on the Marquette Golden Eagles at 8:00 p.m. in their second BIG EAST contest of the season.
