Women’s Soccer Nabs Three BIG EAST Weekly Awards

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Providence College women’s soccer players earned multiple BIG EAST awards as announced by the league on Monday, Sept. 18. The Friars finished the weekend 2-0 with wins over St. Joseph’s (3-0) on Thursday night and UMass Lowell (2-0) on Sunday evening. Katie Day (East Kingston, N.H.), Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) and Christina Rodgers (Scotch Plains, N.Y.) each earned BIG EAST honors for their respective positions. This marks the first time on the 2017 season that the team earned major BIG EAST awards.

Day was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week after anchoring the Friar defense to back-to-back shutouts on the weekend. The Friar defense limited St. Joseph’s and UMass Lowell to a combined eight shots, including just three on goal. Providence held the Hawks to a total of six shots in a 3-0 victory on Thursday evening and just two shots by the River Hawks in a 2-0 victory on Sunday night.

Hogan collected her first BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week recognition with two-consecutive shutouts over two non-conference opponents. The redshirt freshman collected a total of three saves on the weekend, two against St. Joseph’s and a one tally against UMass Lowell. In the Friars match against the River Hawks, Hogan’s lone save came in the 82nd minute of play. The back-to-back wins for the Friars improve Hogan to a 5-4-0 record on the season.

Rodgers was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week with three points on the weekend. The freshman notched an unassisted insurance goal in the Friars’ victory over St. Joseph’s in the 65th minute and dished an assist to Casey Estey’s game winner on Sunday against UMass Lowell.

The Friars will open BIG EAST play and conclude a four-game homestand against Villanova on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 4:00 p.m.
