The Providence College women's soccer team fell to 13th ranked West Virginia, 4-1, in BIG EAST action on Friday, September 17 at Glay Field at Providence, R.I. Providence falls to 3-4 on the season, while West Virginia improves to 6-1.

The Mountaineers took control early in the game. Junior Marisa Kanela of West Virginia scored the first goal of the game at 12:40, assisted by senior Leslie Barden. In the second half, Laura Kane scored at 47:02 with an assist by Rachael Minnich. Two and a half minutes later, Laura Kane returned the favor with an assist to Minnich at 49:45.

Senior Veronica Bakke (Alesund, Norway) scored the lone Friar goal assisted by senior Maura Robertson (Wellesley, Mass.) at the 52:48 mark. Robertson leads the Friars with three assists this season. Ashley Banks of West Virginia, tallied her first assist of the season, giving Minnich her second goal at 74:51, ending the game 4-1. Minnich leads the Mountaineers this season with 13 total points on the season.
 

 

West Virginia held the shot advantage over Providence 30-8, and lead on corner kicks, 3-1.

Sophomore Lana Bannerman started the game for the Mountaineers and recorded two saves. Freshman Ashley Fedyshyn (Lincroft, N.J.) and Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) each recorded four saves.

Providence continues conference play on the road versus Pittsburgh on Sunday, September 19 at 1:00.
