West Virginia (5-1, 0-0 BIG EAST): The Mountaineers began the 2004 season 5-1, with its only defeat coming to 10th ranked Virginia, 0-1, at Morgantown, W.Va. NSCAA-adidas ranked the Mountaineers 16th, while being ranked 21st by Soccer America. West Virginia posted their third shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over Arizona on September 10. The Mountaineers are led offensively by juniors Marisa Kanela and Rachael Minnich, each with three goals and two assists. Sophomore Lana Bannerman leads the Mountaineers with 18 saves and is ranked eighth in the BIG EAST with a .818 save percentage.

Providence College (3-3, 0-0 BIG EAST): The Providence College women's soccer team hosts the West Virginia Mountaineers in its first conference game of the season on Friday, September 17 at Glay Field in Providence, R.I. The Friars are coming off a 2-0 weekend with defeats over Holy Cross (2-1) and Quinnipiac (4-3). Senior BriAnne Bruni (Bristol, Conn.), BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week (Sept. 6-12), leads the team with five goals on the season. Freshman goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) leads the BIG EAST averaging 5.60 saves per game and is second in the conference with 28 total saves.

Providence College is 1-4 all-time versus West Virginia, with its only victory over the Mountaineers dating back to October 2, 1998. The Friars defeated West Virginia 1-0 on that day.
