NEW BRITAIN, CONN. - On Sunday, September 2 the Providence College women's soccer team defeated Central Connecticut, 2-1. Friar freshman Catherine Zimmerman(Madison, N.J.) tallied her third goal of the season in the team's victory.
After scoring two goals in the Friar's win over Lehigh on Friday, August 31, Zimmerman notched the first goal of Sunday's match-up with Central Connecticut. The goal came in the 21st minute off of a corner kick serviced from senior Laura DiClemente(Blue Bell. P.a.). DiClemente and Zimmerman are Providence's leading scorers with eight and six points, respectively.
The Friars completed the first half with a goal from junior Amanda Webster(Saugus, Mass.). In the 45th minute of play, Webster drew Central Connecticut's goalie off of her line and placed the ball in the back of the net. Webster's strike marked her first goal of the season, helping the Friars take a 2-0 lead into halftime.
The Blue Devils struck in the 70th minute when Keriann Welch finished a pass from teammate Allison Kelley. The rest of the second half remained scoreless, and the Friars won, 2-1. Their victory over Central Connecticut marked their second straight win.
Freshman goalkeeper Megan Sweeney (Coral Springs, Fla.) made her debut as a Friar and recorded her first win of the season. Sweeney tallied four saves and the Friar back line limited the Blue Devils to just seven shots.
The Friars outshot Central Connecticut, 15-7 and held the advantage in corner kicks, 5-1. The Friars improved their record to 3-2-1, while the Blue Devils fell to 1-3-0.
The Friars are set to host Brown at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 6 in Providence, R.I. The game will be played on Glay Field.
