Providence College Women’s Soccer junior Catherine Zimmerman (Madison, N.J.) was named to the 2014 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team for women's soccer. The BIG EAST released its preseason poll and awards on Wednesday, August 13.
Zimmerman is one of five forwards on the Preseason All-BIG EAST squad. As a freshman in 2012, Zimmerman played 10 games and led the Friars in scoring with 15 points on seven goals and one assist. Despite missing eight games down the stretch because of injury, she was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team. She saw action in two league games and recorded four points on two goals. As a sophomore in 2013, Zimmerman led the team in points with a team-high seven goals and two assists. This is her second consecutive season making the Preseason All BIG-EAST team.
Joining Zimmerman on the Preseason All-BIG EAST team are forwards Daphne Corboz (Georgetown), Rachel Daly (St. John’s), Katie Martin (Villanova), and Elise Wyatt (DePaul). The midfielders are Serina Kashimoto (Butler), Mary Luba (Marquette), and Mady Vicker (Marquette). The defensive unit includes Georgia Kearney-Perry (St. John’s), with the goalkeeper Alex Godinez (DePaul).
In 2014, the BIG EAST will consist of 10 teams and play a nine-game league schedule in one division. The BIG EAST Women's Soccer Championship will begin with the opening round at campus sites on Nov. 4. Six teams will qualify for the championship. The No. 3 seed will play the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed will play the No. 5 seed in the opening round. The top two seeds will receive byes to the semifinals. The semifinal round and championship game will be played Nov. 7 and 9 at Belson Stadium in Jamaica, N.Y.
Providence will begin the 2014 schedule with a home opener against the University of Rhode Island at 7:00 p.m. on August 22 at the Ray Treacy Track Complex.
