2018 Providence College Women's Soccer Schedule
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Providence College women’s soccer Head Coach Sam Lopes released his team’s 2018 fall schedule today [June 22]. The 18-game slate features match-ups against five teams who qualified for NCAA Tournament action in 2017 and six teams who finished inside the top-50 in the NCAA RPI.
The Friars will open the 2018 schedule with back-to-back home games against Holy Cross (Aug. 16) and Fairleigh Dickinson (Aug. 19) on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium in Providence, R.I. On Aug. 23, the Friars will play the University of Hartford in their first road match of the season in West Hartford, Conn.
Providence will remain on the road for back-to-back games against North Carolina (Aug. 30) and Duke (Sept. 2). Both programs made deep runs in the NCAA Tournament last season. North Carolina, who finished the year ranked No. 4 in the NCAA RPI advanced to the Third Round, while Duke bowed out of the NCAA’s in the semifinals on penalty kicks and finished the year ranked No. 2 in the RPI. The Friars will face both opponents on Duke’s campus in Durham, N.C.
The Friars return home to Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium for a three-game stretch that begins with regional foes Brown (Sept. 6) and Harvard (Sept. 9) and concludes with Drexel University on Sept. 13.
Providence concludes the non-conference portion of its schedule against Arkansas on Sept. 16 in Fayetteville, Ark. Last year, the Friars posted a thrilling, 4-3, come-from-behind victory against the Razorbacks, who finished among the top-50 in the NCAA RPI and were selected to play in the NCAA Tournament.
The Friars open BIG EAST Conference regular-season play on the road against Villanova on Sept. 22, and will return to Anderson Stadium for their BIG EAST home opener against Xavier on Sept. 27.
Four of Providence’s next five matches are scheduled to be played on the road, beginning with back-to-back road games against Butler (Sept. 30) and St. John’s (Oct. 4). Butler finished second in the BIG EAST regular-season standings last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament as an at-large selection.
On Oct. 7, Providence will host Marquette at Anderson Stadium, before hitting the road for two more matches against Georgetown in Washington, D.C. (Oct. 14) and DePaul in Chicago, Ill. (Oct. 18). Georgetown won the BIG EAST Regular-Season and Tournament titles during the 2017 campaign and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, where it was defeated on penalty kicks in the First Round.
The regular-season schedule comes to a close with back-to-back home games at Anderson Stadium against Seton Hall (Oct. 21) and Creighton (Oct. 25).
The BIG EAST saw three teams finish inside the top-50 of the NCAA RPI, led by Georgetown at No. 25. Butler finished at No. 43, followed by Marquette at No. 49.
Providence College completed the 2017 season with a 10-8-2 overall record, including a 5-3-1 mark during BIG EAST action, and finished third in the league standings. The Friars qualified for the BIG EAST Tournament for the fourth-consecutive season.
Looking ahead to the 2018 season, the Friars return 18 players from last year’s squad, including All-BIG EAST First-Team selection Katie Day (East Kingston, N.H.) and Second-Team honorees Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) and Kayla Steeves (Needham, Mass.). Hogan also earned co-BIG EAST Freshman of the Year recognition, while fellow freshman Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) was honored as a BIG EAST All-Freshman Team pick.
