PROVIDENCE - Providence College women's soccer Head Coach Jim McGirrannounced today, Friday, June 7, that Emily Holbrook and Matt Kagan have been named assistant coaches for the women's soccer program. The duo will join the Friars immediately and will look to help Providence build upon its 2012 campaign.
Holbrook has five years of professional playing experience in addition to five years of coaching experience. Holbrook joins the Friars after spending last season as the head coach at Saint Joseph's College (Indiana).
Prior to Saint Joseph's College, Holbrook spent two years as the head coach of St. Charles Community College in Cottleville, Mo. She began the varsity women's soccer program at St. Charles Communnity college and built the program into a NJCAA Regional Championship team. Holbrook helped St. Charles to its first ever District tournament. For her efforts, Holbrook was named Region 16 Coach of the Year in 2010. She produced nine All-Region players in addition to nine All-Conference players.
Prior to her time at St. Charles Community College, Holbrook was an assistant coach for Shorter College in Rome, Ga. (2006-07). Holbrook helped the Lady Hawks to a 15-19-2 mark and back-to-back appearances in the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament.
After an accomplished collegiate career in goal, Holbrook played five years of professional soccer with teams in both England and Canada. In the fall of 2003 Holbrook was a member of the Blackburn Rovers Ladies FC in Lancashire, England who obtained the Northern Combination League Champions Title with an undefeated season (22-0). They won the Lancashire County Cup and went to the fourth round of Football Association Cup play.
Holbrook earned an associate's degree in science from Chattanooga State Technological Community College before graduating from Tennessee Technological University with a bachelor's degree in business administration (2001). In 2007, Holbrook earned a masters degree in leadership from Shorter University in Rome, Ga.
Kagan has over nine years of coaching experience and joins the Friars after spending the last two seasons at the University of Miami as an assistant coach. The Hurricanes finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 9-7-2 and qualified for the ACC Tournament for the first times in five years. In addition Miami reached the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season.
Prior to his stint at Miami, Kagan spent three seasons serving as an assistant coach for the University of Evansville women's soccer team. Known for his recruiting, Kagan recruited Canadian National Team Captain Vanessa Legault-Cordisco to the Purple Aces in 2010. Legault-Cordisco was the first national team player to sign with the program.
Prior to Evansville, Kagan directed Worcester State to three consecutive Division III NCAA Tournament appearances as head coach, and an overall record of 45-15-3 from 2005 through 2007
In 2007, he led the Lancers to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 and a final national ranking of No. 21 in the NSCAA poll. While at Worcester, Kagan helped develop 19 all-conference players, including a 2007 D3Kicks.com All-American. He was also chosen as the 2005 Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Coach of the Year.
Kagan is a 2003 graduate of Southern New Hampshire University where his team advanced the NCAA Tournament Championship Game and was named to the Final Four All-Tournament team in 2002. He spent one season as assistant coach at Assumption College before taking over the Worcester State program in 2005.
