PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College women’s soccer team held its annual banquet on Jan. 27 at the Courtyard Marriott in Providence, R.I. Seniors Madison Doherty (Peabody, Mass.), Kristin Hayman (Redmond, Wash.), Christina Klaum (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) and Juliana Pellegrini (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) were celebrated for their commitment to the program.

The program welcomed honorary guest speaker and program alumna Kerry Ann O’Connor (’14) to reflect on her experience as a program member. O’Connor spoke in regards to being ‘comfortable with being uncomfortable,’ which has become a mantra in which she lives by, in her from experience as a player to the transition into her professional career.

The team celebrated five All-BIG EAST awards including a program-first major BIG EAST award. Shelby Hogan (Franklin, Mass.) was named BIG EAST Co-Freshman of the Year and was also named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team and BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. Teammates Kayla Steeves (Needham, Mass.) and Katie Day (East Kingston, N.H.) joined Hogan with All-BIG EAST Second Team honors. Amber Birchwell (Mastic, N.Y.) was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.

In addition, the team announced its annual program awards. The ‘We Not Me’ Award was presented to Katie Day. The award recognizes a member of the program who prioritizes the team success over individual accolades. The ‘Maximize Today Award’, presented to a member of the program who has excelled athletically and academically, was awarded to Kristin Hayman. The program’s final award, ‘The Process Award’, which recognizes a member of the program who demonstrated significant improvement, was presented to Alessandra Arace (Pittsfield, Mass.).

The Friars concluded the 2017 season 10-8-2 (5-3-1) and advanced to the BIG EAST Tournament for the fourth consecutive season. The program has achieved 10 winning seasons in its 35-year history and Head Coach Sam Lopes has produced a winning season in each of his four seasons with the program.
