Providence Wins Over Rhode Island, 2-1
KINGSTON, R.I. -- Playing in its season opener, Providence College defeated the University of Rhode Island, 2-1, in overtime on Tuesday, September 2 in women's soccer action at Kingston, R.I. PC midfielder Kelly McCusker won the game for the Friars by converting on a direct kick from 23 feet at the 94:39 mark.
After a scoreless first half, Friar freshman Melissa Crowley opened the scoring in the 70th minute as she notched her first collegiate goal on a breakaway. URI's Laura Seymour kicked in a deflected shot to even the game at 1-1 with nine minutes remaining in regulation.
PC goalkeeper Shayna Ross made 10 saves, including a stop on a URI penalty kick in the 79th minute. URI goalkeeper Ashley Stanley recorded three saves for the Rams.
Providence improved its record to 1-0, while Rhode Island dropped to 0-2 overall.
The Lady Friars return to action on Friday, September 5 at 7:00 p.m. against the University of New Hampshire in Hampton, N.H. at Kingston, R.I.
