LOUISVILLE, KY. - The Providence College women's soccer team was defeated by Louisville, 2-0, on Sunday, October 30, in Louisville, Ky. The Friars end their season, 8-9-4 overall and Louisville advances to the semifinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. The Cardinals will play the winner of the Notre Dame/Marquette matchup that is today, Sunday, October 30 at 1:00 p.m. CT/2:00 p.m. ET. The semifinal matchup will take place in Morgantown, W. Va. on Friday, November 4.
In the first half, the Cardinals got an early lead when Jennifer Jones took a corner kick that deflected into the goal in the 11th minute. The Friars had numerous scoring opportunities including a drive down the right side by Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) who crossed the ball in front of the net. Louisville goalkeeper Chloe Kiefer got to the it before senior Taylor Bartini (Suffield, Conn.) could get a touch on the ball. Collins also had a shot in the half.
Early in the second half, the Friars put pressure on Louisville as senior Emily Castle(Stonington, Conn.) took a corner kick in the 50th minute. The Friars were unable to capitalize as Kiefer grabbed it in the air. Senior Laura Di Clemente (Blue Bell, Pa.) took a shot two minutes later but it was saved by Kiefer.
With 77:21 on the clock senior goalkeeper Caitlin Walker (Metuchen N.J.) blocked a shot point-blank to hold the Cardinal lead to one. A minute later, Christine Exeter put the ball in the low left corner from 10 yards out to put Louisville up, 2-0.
Overall, the Friars were outshot by the Cardinals 16-2 including a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. Walker had five saves in the game.
