PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- On senior day, sophomore Lindsey Trubia (Mystic, Conn.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 88th minute to give the Providence College women’s soccer team a 3-2 victory over the Syracuse Orange on Sunday, October 26 at Glay Field. With the win, Providence concludes their season with a 6-8-3 (1-7-3 BIG EAST) record while the Orange finish their season with a 5-11-2 (2-8-1 BIG EAST) record.

Seniors Kelly Determan (San Diego, Ca.), Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.), Megan Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y.), Victoria Neff (Fairfield, Conn.), Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.), and Kimberly Pine (Fairfield, Conn.) were all honored before the game for their dedication to the Friar women’s soccer program. Head coach Jim McGirr presented each senior and their families with flowers and a framed jersey to honor their careers in the black and white.

Pettersen would made her mark early. In the third minute, Pine sent a pass to her, deep in the attacking third. She then beat the last Orange defender and took a shot from 15 yards to put the Friars in the lead, 1-0. Syracuse would answer in the 13th minute as Megan Bellingham took a shot from 30 yards out which hit the top crossbar and bounced into the goal, evening the score at 1-1.

Bellingham would give the Orange a second half lead in the 49th minute as she took a pass from teammate Kaitlin Robbins and took a shot from five yards out for her second goal of the game. The Orange led, 2-1. The Friars would tie the game in the 84th minute as junior Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) crossed the ball in front of SU goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan. Freshman Taylor Bartini (Suffield, Conn.) received the cross and deflected the ball into the net for her first Friar goal, tying the game at 2-2. Trubia would then put the game away in the 88th minute. Gent sent a cross from the far corner which Trubia headed past Bennett-Hattan to give Providence the 3-2 victory.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) tallied a new career high in saves with 11. Bennett-Hattan recorded two saves. Providence outshot Syracuse 20-17. The Orange had the advantage in corner kicks, 5-3.

Providence finished 2008 with their highest amount of wins since the 2003 season with six.
