CHICAGO, ILL. -- The Providence College women's soccer team fell to the DePaul Blue Demons by a score of 1-0 in Chicago on October 21st. The Friars fall to 3-12-1 (2-7 BIG EAST) while the Blue Demons improve to 5-11-1 (2-7 BIG EAST).
The first half started out quickly for both teams. DePaul's Tara Strickland took her team's first shot of the match in the 4th minute, which was stopped by Friar goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.). PC junior Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.) attempted to put the Friars up in the 10th minute as she took a shot that was denied by DU goalkeeper Kelsey Hoinkes. Providence sophomore Greta Houlihan (Belair, Md.) took two shots in the last 10 minutes of the first half that Hoinkes turned away. The score remained tied at 0-0 at the end of the first half.
The second half continued the up and down play. PC's best scoring chance came on a corner kick from Gent in the 56th minute. Gent sent the corner into the box and classmate Megan Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y.) took a shot that was stopped by Hoinkes. DePaul put themselves on the board in the 71st minute when Shannon Williams sent a pass towards Strickland that she put in the back of the net for her second goal of the season which made the score 1-0. PC attempted to equalize on two occasions with shots late in the game from sophomore Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and junior Victoria Neff (Fairfield, Conn.) but both were turned away by Hoinkes giving the Blue Demons the victory.
The Friars will conclude the regular season with two games next weekend. PC will visit Syracuse on Friday, October 27th for a BIG EAST showdown at 7:00 p.m. Providence will then close out the regular season at St. John's on Sunday, October 29th at 1:00 p.m.
