SOUTH BEND, IND. -- The Providence College women's soccer team fell to the 22nd ranked Notre Dame Fightin' Irish by a score of 4-0 in BIG EAST action on Friday, October 19. The Friars fall to 3-11-1 (2-6-0 BIG EAST) while the Irish improve to 10-4-1 (8-0-0 BIG EAST).
The Friars battled the Irish on both ends of the field during the first half. PC had an opportunity in the 25th minute as junior Megan Mancarella (Rochester, N.Y.) sent a shot from the left wing that was saved by Irish goalie Lauren Karas. The Irish opened the scoring in the 34th minute as Kerri Hanks scored her ninth goal of the season on a penalty kick. The Friars kept up the defensive pressure through the rest of the half and the score remained 1-0.
In the second half, Notre Dame made it 2-0 early on when Rebecca Mendoza took a shot from inside the box that sailed into the lower right corner for her first goal of the season. Friar goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) made one of her 10 saves in the 52nd minute as Hanks sent another shot from the left wing that Elfers grabbed on a diving stop. The Irish made it 3-0 in the 54th minute as Mendoza received a pass from Carrie Dew and took a shot from the far left wing. Susan Pinnick finished the scoring for Notre Dame with her third goal of the season on a shot from inside the box in the 86th minute to make it 4-0.
The Friars will continue their road trip on Sunday, October 21st as they travel to Chicago to take on the DePaul Blue Demons at 1:00 p.m.
