Villanova, Pa. - Villanova got a goal and an assist from freshman midfielder Karen Rowland and freshman back Jessica Painchaud as the Wildcats defeated Providence College, 3-0, in a BIG EAST game Sunday afternoon at the Villanova Soccer Field. Sophomore Kelly Stewart scored the third goal for the Wildcats.

The loss drops Providence to 3-12-0 overall and 2-8-0 in league play. Villanova improves to 7-6-2 overall and 3-4-1 in BIG EAST play. The win moves the Wildcats into tournament contention while knocking the Friars from a shot at the BIG EAST Tournament for the first time since 1993.

Villanova's Stewart scored the first goal of the game off an assist from Painchaud at 10:31 as she beat PC's junior goalkeeper, Shayna Ross from 10 yards on the right side. The Wildcats made it a 2-0 lead at 21:51 when Rowland set up Painchaud for an 18-yard blast to the upper right corner. VU got the only goal of the second half as Rowland beat Ross to a loose ball and put it in for a 3-0 lead at 46:18.

Ross made seven saves for Providence in 71 minutes of play. She was replaced by sophomore Jessica Mitchell who made three saves in the final 19 minutes without giving up a goal. That marked the first time in 34 games that someone other than Ross has played in goal for the Friars. Villanova's Janel Schillig made eight saves for the Wildcats.

Providence returns to action on Wednesday, October 21st when they face crosstown rivals, Brown, in a 7:00 p.m. game at Brown.
