The Providence College women's soccer team grabbed a 2-1 win against conference opponent Xavier on Thursday, Oct. 17 on the turf field at the Ray Treacy Track in Providence, R.I. Providence improves to 5-7-3 on the season and 2-4-0 in BIG EAST play. Xavier's record now stands at 8-6-1 and 1-5-0 in the BIG EAST.
The Musketeers struck first in the opening half when Lauren Heap sent a pass into the box that was settled by Mariah Whitaker, who finished nearside for a goal in the 34th minute. Providence was quick to retaliate, scoring the equalizer in the 41st minute. Senior Amanda Webster (Saugus, Mass.) sent a corner to the 18-yard mark that was headed toward goal by sophomore Allison Mills (Atkinson, N.H.). Freshman Hannah Wear (South Salem, N.Y.) then volleyed the header into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal.
Sophomore Catherine Zimmerman notched the game-winning goal in the 50th minute of the second half. She took a pass from Lia Belizzi (Rye, N.Y.) into the box and slid it past the keeper to the nearside. The goal was Zimmerman's fifth goal of the season, which ties her with sophomore Kathryn Hiller (Dartmouth, Mass.) for the team lead in goals scored.
The Friars outshot the Musketeers 21 to 10 in the game. Junior Jessica Goudreault (Sherborn, Mass.) recorded three saves in net to log the victory for the Friars. Xavier's keeper, Katie Markesbery, made eight saves in the game, taking the loss.
Providence returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 20 when the Friars host St. John's in their last home game of the regular season. The Friars' seniors will be honored prior to the start of the game. The game is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. on the turf field located at the Ray Treacy Track.
