PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Despite a strong effort in goal from juniors Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Ashley Fedyshyn (Lincroft, N.J.), the No. 1 ranked Notre Dame offense proved too powerful as the Fighting Irish downed the Providence College women's soccer team, 5-0, on Sunday afternoon at Glay Field. The Friars move to 4-6-5 overall and 1-6-2 in BIG EAST play, while Notre Dame improves to 14-0-1 overall and 7-0-1 in conference play.

The Fighting Irish got on the board early in the match when Brittany Bock knocked in a header off a corner kick from Kerri Hanks at the 6:25 mark. Just over seven minutes later, Hanks tallied her 12th goal of the season when she scored off a rebound. Susan Pinnick had taken the initial shot which was saved by Elfers, but the rebound came out to Hanks who fired it home at the 13:41 mark.

Providence's best chance to score in the first half came after a throw-in with 5:31 left in the period, but Jill Camburn's (Doylestown, Pa.) shot sailed high over the goal. The Irish held an 11-2 edge in shots for the period and a 3-0 advantage in corners. Elfers made five saves in the first half, while Notre Dame's Lauren Karas did not record a save.

In the second half, Notre Dame once again got on the board a few minutes into the period. This time it was Amanda Cinalli scoring an unassisted goal at the 49:35 mark to make it 3-0. Michele Weissenhofer extended the Irish's lead in the 56th minute when she blasted a shot to the top right corner off a feed from Hanks. Ashley Jones finished off the scoring for Notre Dame in the 68th minute when her shot from a wide position on the right side of the field hit the left post and bounced into the net. Courtney Rosen and Jen Buczkowski picked up assists on the play.

For the game, the Fighting Irish outshot the Friars, 21-4. Elfers played the first 70:00 minutes and made seven saves before giving way to Fedyshyn, who recorded three stops. In goal for the Irish, Karas played the 54:20 minutes and Kelsey Lysander played 35:40 minutes. Neither goalkeeper made a save.
