Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Freshman Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) scored two goals to lead the Providence College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over DePaul on Friday afternoon at Glay Field. The win was the first BIG EAST victory of the season for the Friars, who improve to 4-5-5 overall and 1-5-2 in conference play, while DePaul drops to 3-10-2 overall and 0-7-1 in the BIG EAST.

Providence got on the board first in the 14th minute when sophomore Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) dribbled the ball into the box and passed to classmate Victoria Neff (Fairfield, Conn.) who then fed Camburn who fired the ball into an open net for her third goal of the season.

The teams played evenly in the first half with DePaul holding a slight 6-5 edge in shots, although PC held a 3-1 advantage in shots on goal in the period. Providence also had a 2-0 edge in corner kicks in the first half.

Providence quickly expanded on its lead when sophomore defender Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.) served a perfect cross into the box for Camburn. She collected the pass and directed a header into the net at the 47:59 mark for her second goal of the game.

DePaul pressed the action in the second half and outshot the Friars, 13-1, but managed to fire just five of those shots on goal. In the 82nd minute, however, Katie Kiene served a corner into the penalty area and Lea Hill headed it into the net to cut the deficit to one.

PC junior goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) was solid the rest of the way and helped to preserve the victory. Elfers finished with five saves, while DePaul's Cara LaRocca made two stops.

The Friars will continue BIG EAST play when they host No. 1 Notre Dame on Sunday, October 15, at 1:00 p.m. The match will be televised via tape delay on Cox Sports Television on Sunday at 5:00 p.m., shortly after the conclusion of the game.
