Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Despite holding a 1-0 lead at the half, the Providence College women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to St. John's on Senior Day on Sunday afternoon at Glay Field. The Friars trailed 3-1 with less than nine minutes remaining when senior Leah Viera (Rochester, N.Y.) appeared to score two goals in the span of less than two minutes to tie the game. The second goal, however, was disallowed because the Friars were offside and the Red Storm held on for the 3-2 win.

Providence got on the board first when freshman Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) tallied her second goal of the season. Sophomore Christine Gent had crossed the ball into the box and junior Ashley Amaral (Cumberland, R.I.) had knocked in down before Camburn knocked it home at the 22:52 mark.

PC controlled play in the first half and held a 6-5 edge in shots and a 2-0 advantage in corner kicks. That changed dramatically in the second half as the Red Storm held an 8-2 edge in shots and 2-0 advantage in corner kicks.

St. John's tied the match in the 50th minute when Julianna Cohen took a direct kick from 25 yards out that went over the Providence wall and above the outstretched arms of PC junior goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.).

In the 58th minute, Amanda Santos dribbled in alone and chipped the ball over Elfers to give the Red Storm a 2-1 advantage. Amanda Pasciolla lofted a shot into the upper right corner in the 67th minute to score the eventual gamewinner.

Vieira brought PC within one when she tallied at the 81:39 mark off a feed from junior Kelsey Kirkpatrick (Hatboro, Pa.). She appeared to score the game-tying goal less than two minutes later off a pass from freshman Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.), but it was negated by the offside call.

In goal, Elfers made eight saves for PC, while Jaime Beran stopped four shots for St. John's.

With the loss, the Friars drop to 3-5-5 overall and 0-5-2 in the BIG EAST, while St. John's improves to 7-3-3 overall and 3-2-2 in the BIG EAST. The Friars will continue BIG EAST play when they host DePaul on Friday, October 13, at 3:00 p.m.
