PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Sophomore Greta Houlihan's (Belair, Md.) first goal as a Friar in the fourth minute of the game gave the Providence College women's soccer team a victory over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights by a score of 1-0. The Friars improve to 2-9-1 (1-4-0 BIG EAST) on the season while the Scarlet Knights fall to 6-5-2 (1-2-2 BIG EAST).

In the opening minutes of the game, Houlihan stole the ball deep in the Scarlet Knight zone. After getting by a RU defender at the top of the box, she took the Friars' first shot of the game that sailed over goalkeeper Erin Guthrie's outstretched arms and into the net.

The Scarlet Knights' Gina Demaio dominated her team's offensive attack throughout the first half including a shot in the 34th minute that was deflected and saved by PC goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.).

Elfers continued her strong play in the second half with a save in the 58th minute on a shot from DeMaio. The Friar chances continued when junior Victoria Neff (Fairfield, Conn.) took a shot in the 72nd minute that Guthrie pushed away on a diving play. Rutgers had a close opportunity to equalize on a corner kick from DeMaio that was deflected out of the Friar zone by the PC defense.

"It's a big win for us, amazing." said Houlihan after the game. "It really gets our confidence rolling going into next week against West Virginia and Pitt."

Elfers notched her second shutout of the season and had nine saves in the game. Guthrie finished the game with five saves.

PC junior Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) took three of the Friars' nine shots, continuing her strong play. Sophomore Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) had two shots for the Friars. The Scarlet Knights finished with 23 shots in the game.
