PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Despite outshooting Syracuse by a two-to-one margin in the second half, the Providence College women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 1-0 decision to the Orange on Friday afternoon at Glay Field. After the teams had played to a scoreless first half with the Friars outshooting the Orange, 4-3, Syracuse was able to convert one of its chances early in the second half. Sarah VanSickle's header at the 52:52 mark off a cross from Tessa McDougall provided Syracuse all the offense it would need. It was the Orange's first goal in more than 360 minutes, a span of more than three and a half games.

Providence continued to pressure the Syracuse net and outshot the Orange 8-4 in the period. Syracuse goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan made all four of her saves in the half to earn her fourth shutout of the season. Providence junior goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) was equally impressive and also recorded four saves.

With the loss, the Friars drop to 3-4-5 overall and 0-4-2 in the BIG EAST, while Syracuse improves to 2-9-3 overall and 1-4-1 in the BIG EAST.

The Friars will continue BIG EAST play when they host St. John's on Sunday, October 8, at 1:00 p.m. Seniors Erin Mastrodonato (Rochester, N.Y.) and Leah Vieira (Rochester, N.Y.) will be honored in a pre-game ceremony.
