PROVIDENCE, R.I.-- On a warm day at Glay Field, the Providence College women's soccer team was defeated by the Seton Hall Pirates, 2-0 on Friday, October 5th. The Friars fall to 1-9-1 on the season, 0-3 in the BIG EAST. Seton Hall improves to 6-3-2 on the season with a BIG EAST record with 2-1-1.
The Friars put strong offensive pressure on the Pirates in the first half. In the 24th minute, sophomore Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) sent a cross into the box which was received by junior Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.). Pettersen took a shot which was saved by SHU goalkeeper Amanda Becker. Pettersen then regained possession and took another shot which was deflected wide by Becker. Seton Hall opened the scoring in the 36th minute, as Maeve O'Donnell took a shot from the top of the box which beat PC goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.). In the 32nd minute, junior Christie Gent (Plantation, Fla.) sent a cross from the left channel, which Pettersen received and took a shot. Becker played it and made the save.
The scoring chances continued in the second half when in the 69th minute, sophomore Caitlin Hostetler (Portsmouth, R.I.) took a corner kick which she sent into the middle of the box. Pettersen took her fourth shot of the game off the corner which was cleared off the line by a Seton Hall defender and then blocked out of bounds by Becker. The Pirates finished the game with a goal in the 89th minute from Madelene Kill. Teammate Cassie Gioia sent a pass towards Kill, which she put in the back of the net.
Elfers ended the game with five saves off 14 Pirate shots. Becker totaled six saves off 13 shots from the Friars.
PC returns to action on Sunday, October 7th when they battle the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 1:00 at Glay Field.
