PROVIDENCE, R.I. - On Monday, October 1, the Providence College women's soccer team hosted BIG EAST foe DePaul in an afternoon cap at Glay Field. The Friars defeated the Blue Demons 1-0, with the game winner coming from freshman Lauren Elia(Erie, Pa.) The Friars improved their BIG EAST record to 3-3-0 (8-5-1 Overall) while the Blue Demons fell to a 2-3-0 BIG EAST record (7-6-1 Overall).
The first 45 minutes at Glay Field were scoreless. The Friars out-shot DePaul, 6-5 but carried a 0-0 tie into the half.
The Friars generated an attack in the 73rd minute of play when junior Alyssa Martino(Plainville, Conn.) carried the ball up the left flank. Martino's cross was finished by Elia who volleyed the feed into the back of the net. Elia's finish marked her fourth goal of the year and Martinos assist served as her second on the season. Combined the two have tallied 10 points for the Friars, eight and two, respectively.
Senior Jenna Roncarati(Cumberland, R.I.) anchored the Friars' defensive third. Providence was able to withstand DePaul's pressure for the remainder of regulation to notch their third BIG EAST win of the season.
Providence finished the game with seven shots and sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goudreault(Sherborn, Mass.) tallied four saves. The victory over DePaul improves Goudrealt's overall season record to 6-5-1.
The Friars are set to host #19 Marquette on Friday, October 5 at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played on Glay Field.
