PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College Friars were defeated by the St. John's University Red Storm, 1-0, in overtime in BIG EAST Northeast Division women's soccer action on Sunday, October 1 at Providence, R.I. Junior forward Marissa Stork (Flushing, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal for St. John's in the first overtime session.

The Friars and the Red Storm ended regulation play with a scoreless tie. During the first two halves, St. John's outshot Providence by a 15-11 margin. Regulation play featured numerous scoring opportunities that were denied by Providence goalkeeper Caroline Haines (Stillwater, Minn.) and Red Storm goalkeepers Jen Frankel (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) and Tina Fogg (Warwick, R.I.).

Stork won the game for the Red Storm when she beat PC's Haines at 96:45. Stork blasted a shot from the 18-yard line following a pass from junior midfielder Kristy Bergen (Massapequa, N.Y.) to give St. John's the 1-0 decision.

In goal, Frankel and Fogg combined to stop eight Friar shots. Providence's Haines recorded nine saves in defeat. With the win, St. John's improves its record to 8-5-0 overall and 1-3-0 in the BIG EAST Northeast Division. Providence's record falls to 3-8-0 overall and 0-4-0 in divisional play with the loss.

The Friars return to action on Wednesday, October 4, when they host the University of New Hampshire at PC's Glay Field at 3:30 p.m.
