On Friday, September 28, the Providence College women's soccer team hosted BIG EAST foe Notre Dame in an afternoon cap at Glay Field. The Friars fell to the Fighting Irish, 1-0. The Friars currently hold a BIG EAST record of 2-3-0 (7-5-1 Overall) while the Fighting Irish own a 4-0-0 BIG EAST record (8-3-1 Overall).
The rain was prevalent at the beginning of the match and extended through regulation play. At the half way mark, Providence and Notre Dame were tied, 0-0.
In the 83rd minute, a Notre Dame cross landed in front of the Friars' goal. In Providence's attempt to clear the ball, the Notre Dame feed found the back of the net, giving the Fighting Irish a 1-0 lead.
Providence fought back by pushing numbers forward. In the 89th minute, Lauren Elia's (Erie, Pa.) strike off of a set piece taken by Laura DiClemente (Blue Bell, Pa.) landed just wide of the Notre Dame goal. The Fighting Irish were able to withstand the Friars' pressure and won the game, 1-0. Notre Dame has been the only team to beat the Friars at home this season.
Providence finished the game with 10 shots and sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goudreault (Sherborn, Mass.) tallied six saves.
The Friars are set to host Depaul on Saturday, September 30 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played on Glay Field.
