Christy Merrihew's First Career Goal Gives PC Win Over St. John's, 1-0

Jamaica, N.Y. - Freshman midfielder Christy Merrihew (Trumbull, Conn.) scored the first goal of her collegiate career and goalkeeper Shayna Ross (Sr., Whitman, Mass.) held off the St. John's offense as the Providence College Friars shutout the Red Storm, 1-0, in Jamaica, New York.

Merrihew scored the only goal of the game at 21:46 of the first half when her crossing pass went off St. John's goalkeeper Tina Fogg and into the net. Kelly McCusker (Sr., Simsbury, Conn.) picked up the assist on the goal.

From there, the PC defense helped Ross pick up her first shutout of the season as the Friars were outshot, 11-5 in the game. Ross made four saves for the Friars while Fogg was forced to make three for St. John's.

The win improves Providence to 2-5-0 on the year and 1-1-0 in BIG EAST Northeast Division play while St. John's is now 4-3-1 on the year and 0-2-0 in the Northeast Division.

PC returns to action on Friday, October 1st when the Friars host Boston College in a Northeast Division game at Glay Field beginning at 3:00 p.m.
