Women's Soccer Ties Marquette, 1-1 in BIG EAST Action
Sept. 25, 2008
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior Kelly Pettersen (Massapequa, N.Y.) gave the Providence College women's soccer team an early 1-0 lead, but a late second half goal from the Marquette Golden Eagles would result in a 1-1 tie during the game on Thursday, September 25 at Glay Field. The tie moves the Friars to 5-2-1, (0-1-1 BIG EAST) on the season while the Golden Eagles go to 5-3-2, (1-0-1 BIG EAST). Pettersen's goal came in the fourth minute of the game. After a Marquette defenseman mishandled a deflected headball, Pettersen gained control 35 yards out of the Golden Eagle goal. She took a shot from the top of the box, past goalkeeper Natalie Kulla to give the Friars the early 1-0 lead. Friar sophomore goalkeeper Jill Schott (Windham, N.H.) made four of her five saves during the opening period. The Friars held the lead for the majority of the second half until the 76th minute. Golden Eagle Julia Victor took possession from 25 yards and took a shot to the right corner, just past Schott's reach. The goal tied the game at 1-1. The game headed into overtime, with the second overtime belonging to Friar junior Tara Ricciardi (Wayne, N.J.) whose repeated crosses late in the game were thwarted by the strong Golden Eagle defense. The game eventually ended in the 1-1 tie after 110 minutes of soccer. The Golden Eagles outshot the Friars 21-7 in the contest. Kulla and Chelsey Turner combined for three saves during the game. Marquette had the advantage in corner kicks 12-6. PC will travel to USF on Sunday, September 28 to take on the Bulls in BIG EAST action. Kickoff is set for 11:00 a.m.
