Frairs Drop BIG EAST Northeast Division Opener To Miami 2-0
Sept. 24, 1999 Providence, R.I. - Freshman forward Allison McWhinney scored one goal and assisted on the second to lead the University of Miami Hurricanes to a 2-0 win over the Providence College Friars on Friday afternoon at Glay Field in BIG EAST women's soccer action. The win for Miami came in the Hurricanes' first BIG EAST game ever as they enter their first season of league play. Providence falls to 1-5-0 on the year, 0-1-0 in BIG EAST play while Miami is now 6-2-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in the league. McWhinney scored her seventh goal of the season at 24:58 of the first half off a great feed from the right corner by freshman midfielder Laura West to give the Hurricanes the 1-0 lead. Just over three minutes later at 28:02, McWhinney took her turn setting up senior Nina Wathne who drilled a shot past PC goalkeeper Shayna Ross (Sr., Whitman, Mass.) from 16-yards out for her second goal of the season. Ross made three saves in goal for the Friars while Miami's Elizabeth Swinson made five saves for the Hurricanes on the way to her second shutout of the season. The Friars return to BIG EAST action on Sunday, September 26th when they travel to St. John's for a 2:00 p.m. game. Miami is at Boston College on Sunday. at Providence, R.I.
