Women's Soccer Drops 2-0 Decision to Marquette
Sept. 24, 2006
Providence, R.I. -- The Providence College women's soccer team (3-3-3, 0-3-0 BIG EAST) dropped a tough 2-0 decision to Marquette (4-3-3, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) on Sunday, September 24, at Glay Field. While the total shots were even at 10 apiece, the Friars fired more shots on goal (5-4) and had two more attempts hit the crossbar. The Friars also held a commanding 7-3 advantage in corner kicks. The Golden Eagles jumped on the board quickly when Allison Mallams scored on a header off a corner kick from Katie Kelly at the 8:27 mark. Marquette extended the lead to 2-0 right before the half at the 42:40 mark when Alison Loughrin lofted a shot over PC junior goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) after receiving a feed from Anna Sawicki. Providence, which had been outshot 6-3 in the first half, came out and play inspired soccer in the second frame, outshooting the Golden Eagles, 7-4. Junior Ashley Amaral (Cumberland, R.I.) received a feed from freshman Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.) and hit the crossbar with 30:30 left in what was perhaps Providence's best chance. With just under 16 minutes left, freshman Katelin Blaine (Warwick, N.Y.), who earned her first career start in today's match, had her shot hit the post. Amaral had a header with two minutes remaining and Benko had a strong attempt with under a minute that forced Marquette goalie Christy Smith to make a diving save to the right, but neither found the back of the net. In goal for Providence, Elfers made two saves. Laura Boyer played 78:30 and stopped three shots for Marquette and Smith came on in relief for the final 11:30 and made two saves.
The Friars will continue BIG EAST play next weekend when they travel to face Georgetown on Friday, September 29. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
